The final station. Wall balls: full squat, drive, throw to the target, catch, repeat — with the whole race in your legs and the finish line metres away. More races are decided here than anywhere else on the course.

Wall balls carry the largest time share of any station, and the widest spread between athletes who trained them under fatigue and athletes who trained them fresh. This is the station that repays every hard rep you did in preparation.

Coach's cue

Full squat, drive through the hips, eyes on the target. Big first set, then breathe.

Wall balls are the most no-repped station in HYROX. The wall ball no-rep technique guide trains the depth and target standards rep by rep, and the no-reps & penalties guide maps every judged standard on the course.

Common faults — and what they cost

How it fits the race

Wall balls are station 8 of 8 — the last thing between you and the finish: Sandbag Lunges → Run 8 → Wall Balls → finish line. There is nothing to save for. The only pacing question is the set scheme that gets you to the last rep without stalling.

Pacing note

Wall balls take about 8.5% of a typical finish — the biggest single station share, roughly 7:39 at 90:00 pace. Decide your set scheme before the race (for example a big opener, then steady sets with fixed 5-breath rests) and execute it like a script. In doubles, partners alternate sets — short sets, fast swaps.

FAQ

How heavy is the wall ball in HYROX and how high is the target?

Open division: 6kg ball to a 3.0m target for men, 4kg to 2.7m for women. Pro division: 9kg to 3.0m for men, 6kg to 2.7m for women. Volume is 100 reps (75 for women). Standards from public 2025/26 season rules — verify with the official rulebook.

How many wall balls are in HYROX?

100 reps, with 75 for women, as the final station of the race. In doubles the total is shared between partners, split however you choose — most pairs alternate short sets.

How do I avoid no-reps on wall balls?

Two standards get policed: full squat depth at the bottom and the ball clearly hitting at or above the target line. Train to a target that is honest about height, film your depth, and build sets you can complete cleanly under fatigue.
