HYROX Chicago 2027: Race Weekend Guide — Eat, See, Compete

Updated July 2026 · 5 min read

HYROX Chicago 2027 is a February race in a city that takes winter personally. The food scene is one of the best in the United States, the lakefront skyline is worth the trip alone — and the whole weekend plan has to respect the cold. Here is how to do it right.

The race: HYROX Chicago 2027

HYROX Chicago runs February 11–15, 2027 in Chicago, USA. Same format as every HYROX in the world — 8 × 1 km of running, 8 stations, one Roxzone — which is exactly why your time here is comparable to anyone's time anywhere. Dates, division weights, and nearby alternative events are on the HYROX Chicago 2027 race page; registration itself is handled by HYROX on hyrox.com.

If the race is still weeks out, work backwards from February 11, 2027: the race time calculator turns a goal time into per-station splits, and the guides cover format, doubles strategy, and standards.

Eat: the deep-dish question, answered

Let's settle it: Chicago deep-dish pizza is a cheese-and-butter-crust monument, closer to a casserole than a carb-load, and it sits in your stomach accordingly. It is a spectacular post-race meal. The night before, the local move is tavern-style thin crust — the square-cut pizza Chicagoans actually eat most — or pasta.

For pasta, the West Loop is the city's restaurant row, with Italian kitchens at every price point; book ahead, it is Chicago's busiest dining district. Little Italy on Taylor Street is the traditional red-sauce neighbourhood. If your pre-race stomach prefers rice and noodles, Chinatown on the Red Line delivers exactly that, and Greektown's bread-and-rice-heavy plates work too.

The Italian beef sandwich, the deep-dish, and the local brewery tour form the official post-race itinerary. In that order or all at once.

See: skyline miles without the wind chill

February in Chicago is serious — often below freezing, with wind off the lake that has earned its reputation. Build an indoor-heavy day. Start at Millennium Park and Cloud Gate ("the Bean") — a short, flat, photogenic stop. The Chicago Riverwalk is a level stroll through the city's famous architecture canyon; in February, do a short stretch and duck indoors.

The indoor wins: the Art Institute of Chicago is one of the world's great museums — cap it at ninety minutes, marble floors are standing fatigue in disguise — and the observation decks (Willis Tower's Skydeck, 875 North Michigan's deck) deliver the entire city from a heated room via elevator: the ultimate zero-legs sightseeing. Downtown's Pedway — the underground walkway network — lets you cover surprising distances without meeting the wind at all.

If you get a mild day, the Lakefront Trail is pancake-flat and perfect for a shakeout jog with skyline views. Check the wind chill before believing the thermometer.

WhenWhat
Night before, done by ~8pmCarb-forward dinner, roughly 3–4 g of carbs per kg bodyweight — pasta, rice, or potatoes plus lean protein. Easy on fat, fibre, and anything fried; skip the alcohol. Keep sipping water through the evening.
3 hours before your waveBreakfast: 1–2 g/kg of familiar carbs — oats, white bread with jam and honey, a banana. Nothing you haven't eaten before a hard session.
60–90 minutes outSmall top-up if you want one: a banana or a few sips of sports drink. Keep drinking water with electrolytes, don't chug.
45–60 minutes outCaffeine, 3–6 mg/kg, if you already use it in training. If you don't, race day is not the day to start.
Final 15 minutesSips only. Spend the time on your warm-up — 10 minutes easy jogging plus a few strides beats any last-minute gel.

These are the defaults RoxDuo's race-week plans build fueling around — adjust the numbers to your gut, not to the athlete next to you.

FAQ

When is HYROX Chicago 2027?

HYROX Chicago runs February 11–15, 2027. Confirm your wave day when assignments open — details and division weights are on the race page.

What should I eat in Chicago the night before HYROX?

Pasta in the West Loop or Little Italy, or tavern-style thin-crust pizza — the square-cut kind locals actually eat. Deep-dish is a butter-crust casserole and belongs to the night after your race.

What can I do in Chicago without tiring my legs?

Cloud Gate and a short Riverwalk stretch, then go indoors: the Art Institute (capped at ninety minutes) or an observation deck reached entirely by elevator. The Pedway lets you walk downtown without facing the wind.

What is the weather like in Chicago in February?

Cold — often below freezing, with lake-effect wind that makes it feel colder. Plan indoor sightseeing, cover exposed skin between transit and venue, and pack dry post-race clothes.

Is deep-dish pizza okay before a race?

Not the night before — it is extremely heavy in fat and slow to digest. Make it your recovery meal instead; it is much better company when the work is done.
